"The education in the city is bound to be a cut above the countryside where you're from, and the questions will be harder too." Kang Xiaobo assumed Wei Zhao simply had not adjusted yet, and consoled him: "You'll get used to it soon enough."
"Mm." Wei Zhao nodded. There was no way to explain more to Kang Xiaobo. He thought Kang Xiaobo was a good friend, but his own affairs were not something he could tell him.
Because they were not people of the same world at all.
During the second class of the afternoon, a staff member from the discipline office came to announce that Director Wang Zhifeng wanted to speak with Wei Zhao, along with Zhong Yongliang, Gao Xiaofu, and Zhang Naipao.
Wei Zhao said nothing and simply rose and walked out of the classroom. Kang Xiaobo was rather worried the school might punish Wei Zhao over this — after all, to carry a disciplinary record on the eve of graduating senior year would be a poor bargain.
But Wei Zhao had no such concerns. For one thing, Wang Zhifeng had a hold he could use against him; for another, he was only here to keep the princess company at her books, and his file was a forgery anyway. Punishment or no punishment, what did he care?
Zhong Yongliang's expression, however, changed. He hesitated a moment before rising to his feet, and when Gao Xiaofu and Zhang Naipao saw him stand, they stood and followed him out as well.
At the doorway, Zhong Yongliang stopped and said to Gao Xiaofu and Zhang Naipao: "When Wang Zhifeng asks about this morning, we all say we don't know anything. We say Brother Black Panther must have had some private grudge against Wei Zhao. We only know Brother Black Panther; he asked us which one was Wei Zhao, and we pointed him out. Beyond that, none of it has anything to do with us."
Gao Xiaofu and Zhang Naipao had been worried the school would punish them over this too. Their family backgrounds were nowhere near as strong as Zhong Yongliang's; he might come out unscathed, but the two of them could well end up the scapegoats.
Hearing Zhong Yongliang's instructions now, they nodded and agreed at once.
Zhong Yongliang stared at Wei Zhao's back, not far ahead of him, and clenched his fist in hatred. Today's business had made a public fool of him, and it was all thanks to this transfer student.
He had not expected Wei Zhao to be so skilled. It seemed his usual habit of settling things with his fists was not going to cut it anymore.
When they reached Wang Zhifeng, he listened to Zhong Yongliang and the others' account and of course knew it was a pack of lies. Word had already come from the police station: that Black Panther was the chief of security at Zhong Yongliang's father's nightclub. What business did a security chief have coming to school to make trouble for Wei Zhao?
If anyone tried to say this had nothing to do with Zhong Yongliang, Wang Zhifeng would not believe it for a second. But he had already consulted the principal, and given Zhong Yongliang's family background, the matter could only be handled quietly. At the police station, Black Panther had shouldered the whole thing himself, so there was no need for Wang Zhifeng to offend anyone further.
So he gave Zhong Yongliang and the others a few words of reprimand and sent them back.
Once only Wei Zhao was left, Wang Zhifeng did not ask much about the morning either. It was obvious the morning's business had nothing to do with Wei Zhao, so there was no need for him to ask.
He had kept Wei Zhao behind alone to ask his opinion: "Wei Zhao, Zhong Yongliang and those boys are no good, but the school can't do much about them because of his family connections. How about this — shall I transfer you to another class?"
