Kang Xiaobo's huge voice was far louder than Tang Yun's, Liu Xinwen's, and Song Huiping's had been, and it stood out harshly against the noisy crowd.
This time the shout finally caught the attention of Lan Fen on the third floor. She lowered her head with vacant eyes and looked toward the source of the sound, and at that one glance an incredulous light crossed her face, a faint brightness kindled in her eyes, and her whole body trembled with excitement as she murmured to herself. Her voice was not loud, but those standing close downstairs could hear it clearly.
"Zhaoming, is that you? You have come to see me at last..." A pleased, contented smile curved Lan Fen's lips. "You came for me. You never abandoned me after all... Zhaoming..."
Kang Xiaobo was utterly baffled. He had not quite understood what Lan Fen meant, and he turned to Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen in confusion.
Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen had been puzzled too, thinking Lan Fen was hallucinating, but when they suddenly turned and saw Kang Xiaobo's face, Tang Yun could not help crying out in surprise, "Wenwen... he and that Kang Zhaoming..."
Before this, Tang Yun had felt that Kang Xiaobo looked somehow familiar, though she had paid it no mind. As Wei Zhao's follower, he could hardly be a good person, and was surely one of those brawling troublemakers at school, so if he seemed familiar, she had assumed she must once have seen him doing something bad, and she had thought no more of it.
But today, hearing Lan Fen's words and looking again at Kang Xiaobo's face, Tang Yun had to admit it. They looked alike! They looked far too alike!
Unless one thought in that direction, it would be hard to connect the two men, but once Kang Xiaobo was placed beside the Kang Zhaoming of before for comparison, from the outline of the face to the nose and the mouth... though not exactly identical, the resemblance was astonishing!
"Oh no! She can't be mistaking him for Kang Zhaoming? Nothing must go wrong!" Liu Xinwen's heart gave a start as well. How could there be so many coincidences in the world that, just at the moment Lan Fen was about to jump, a boy who looked so much like Kang Zhaoming should appear at the scene...
"Kang Zhaoming?" From what Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen said, Kang Xiaobo guessed something of the truth. Lan Fen must have been wounded in love, or she would never have spoken such strange words before, yet the name "Kang Zhaoming" struck his heart like a sharp sword. His face twisted in an instant, his hands clenched into tight fists, and even his breathing quickened. "You are saying she took me for Kang Zhaoming?"
"Yes, you look just like the man who abandoned Xiaofen! Could you be some relative of his?" Liu Xinwen had not noticed anything strange in Kang Xiaobo's expression, and thinking him merely puzzled, she spoke without restraint. "Get out of the way for now. Your face is a clash!"
"A relative..." A ferocious glint flashed through Kang Xiaobo's eyes as he silently repeated the three words. Liu Xinwen had spoken more truly than she knew, for Kang Zhaoming really was a relative of Kang Xiaobo's family! He was the younger grandson of the eldest great-grandfather's line, and by reckoning, Kang Xiaobo's own second elder cousin.
"What are you muttering about? Hurry up and hide! Nothing must happen..." Liu Xinwen had not heard what Kang Xiaobo was saying, and she frowned.
Bitterness and anger churned together in Kang Xiaobo's heart... Had she been abandoned by his second cousin Kang Zhaoming? How could so fine a girl have been driven to jump?
Just as Kang Xiaobo stood dazed, Lan Fen on the third floor suddenly broke into a happy, satisfied smile. "Brother Zhaoming... I am coming. Wait for me..."
Tang Yun, Liu Xinwen, and Song Huiping all cried inwardly that this was bad! Lan Fen's mood was all wrong. She must be thinking of doing something desperate!
